Hacktivism – good or bad? Whenever someone hears this word, they would most likely have a preconceived idea about the topic and whether it is a good or bad thing.
People automatically think about people hacking into their private files when they think about hackers but its not until hacktivism is explained to them that they begin to see a different side.
Khatchadourian, R. (2010) discusses how WikiLeaks began and that their intentions are to release information that is being hidden from the public, and in most cases affects the public in some way. This is always the main intentions of hacktivists, to release information and the truth.
Many other ‘famous’ hacktivist groups such as Anonymous and LulzSec also have the same intentions when they hack. Their political motivations are evident in the information that is released. Their hacks however have both been called charitable or otherwise illegal depending on a persons views of hacktivism.

I think, hacktivists are an important source of information- especially recently with Hilary Clinton’s emails. It’s important for the govenment to be clear and see-through when it comes to important topics and if they are hiding things that dramatically effect the well-being of the public and those they are supposed to be protecting; then i think hacking to inform the public is justified and I would encourage it.
They are people too though, so as long as it’s not personal photos or information, they I think hacktivism is something we need.
When this kind of this is abused to steal peoples identity’s and bank details etc; that’s when it becomes a problem.
Hacktivists are definitely an important source of information when it comes to exposing major corporations, governments and politicians. In my opinions hackers (the ones with good intentions) help out citizens who seem powerless. This article explores nine ways hacktivists that changed the world.
